SUBMITTING to OQ

Orange Quarterly publishes contemporary artists and photographers as well as poets and writers who write in English. We only accept submissions online, via email (see below), and soon we'll be accepting submissions exclusively via Submittable. Orange Quarterly takes submissions on a rolling basis, year-round, in line with our quarterly reading schedule. We publish four online issues a year, including an interactive, fully comprehensive issue on orangequarterly.com as well as a professionally designed PDF magazine on Issuu. (In late autumn 2012, we'll reveal Anthology Orange, or first annual print anthology of our favorite work from each of our four 2012 issues.) Our quarterly publication dates are:

  • AUTUMN: October 31
  • WINTER: January 31
  • SPRING: May 15
  • SUMMER: July 31

Send no more than five stories, essays, poems, photographs, or art pieces per quarter-year. Fiction and nonfiction submissions should be fewer than 7,500 words. We also accept flash fiction, memoir excerpts, and prose poetry.

To submit, email your work only as a .doc / .docx (for poetry, fiction, and nonfiction submissions) or a good quality .jpg / .tiff (for art and photography) attachment to orangequarterly@gmail.com.

  • Please make the subject of the email: [Genre] Submission: [Your name as you would like it to appear if published]. (EX: Poetry Submission: Michael Bob Silver.)
  • Do NOT include your name or contact information anywhere on your submission attachment. We will review all submissions blindly.

If you are submitting nonfiction, consider that we will only publish personal essays (and memoir excerpts) and essays about writers/writing and artists/art, including philosophical, imaginative, or argumentative essays.

Include in the body of your email the following criteria:

  • Your name (as you would like it appear if published).
  • Your email address and the city you live in.
  • A short bio, 50-100 words, describing you and/or your work (in third person, suitable for publishing), along with a good quality .jpg.tiff headshot of you (attached).
  • Any brief additional information you'd like to share about the work you are submitting.

OQ's TERMS + CONDITIONS

When you submit your work to OQ, you acknowledge that Orange Quarterly will retain first publication rights to your work, if we choose to publish it. This means that if the work is published elsewhere in the future, the author/publisher should indicate that the work first appeared in Orange Quarterly. We will also archive your published work in perpetuity.

We wish we could pay those we publish for the work they submit, but we don't make any money, so we can't. We accept simultaneous submissions — but you must let us know as soon as possible if your work is selected for another publication.

All published work will be copy edited in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style.

Orange Quarterly may consider featuring your work directly on orangequarterly.com and announcing it through our social media accounts, including our Facebook and/or Twitter. An Orange Quarterly editor may ask any of its published writers or artists to be interviewed (via email) for a feature on our website. An editor may also request our published writers to record audio of their selected pieces for our website. You may choose to decline an interview or recording, though we hope Orange Quarterly can act as a way for both emerging and established writers and artists to boost their online presence. We encourage you to share your creative work and ideas with your friends, family, and followers, to help us build a better literary arts community.

We will respond to your submission within six months of the date you submitted. If you have not heard from us after six months, please email orangequarterly@gmail.com with the subject line: Submission Notice Request. (UPDATE 5/12/12: We are behind with our responses; we sincerely apologize and will get back with all of our submitters soon.)
